Truck Performance Detector (TPD) reduces the potential for
derailment and infrastructure damage by alarming for rail
cars whose suspension systems are not tracking properly
along curved track due to worn or defective undercarriages.
Trucks with poor curving performance cause rapid wear to
rail car components, excessive fuel consumption, and damage
to track. In extreme cases, these defective vehicles
can cause derailments.
The TPD measures a widely distributed array of vertical and lateral forces as each vehicle passes the wayside detector site adjacent to a curved section of track. The advantage of wayside truck performance monitoring is that no modification or additional hardware is required for the rail car. The system identifies vehicles that exhibit difficulty negotiating a curve for maintenance at the next economically viable opportunity.
